Tour of Jane Addams Hull House and Museum
Jane Addams founded, with Ellen Gates Starr, the world famous social settlement Hull-House on Chicago's near West Side in 1889. From Hull-House, where she lived and worked until her death in 1935, Jane Addams built her reputation as the country's most prominent woman through her writing, settlement work and international efforts for peace. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931. United Neighborhood Centers of America (UNCA) was founded by Jane Addams. Peter B. Goldberg, a keynote speaker at the AEA Conference, is the present CEO of UNCA.
The tour through the home and museum is scheduled for May 27, 2009 and takes about one hour. Some of the special exhibits include: Urban Experience in Chicago: Hull-House and Its Neighborhoods, 1889-1963; Ida B. Wells and Jane Addams: Chicago Contemporaries for Equality and Reform; and Urban Archaeology Chicago: the Hull-House Settlement and the U of I at Chicago. For more information go to www.uic.edu/jaddams/hull.
