LILLIAN LANSBERRY MEMORIAL AWARD
The Lillian Brooks Lansberry Award for Excellence in Adoption was established to honor this staunch adoption advocate.  The award is given bi-annually to an adoption worker who each day makes extraordinary efforts to connect waiting children with families.  Each award recipient receives a $1,000 scholarship to do something special—something that can’t be done without the award—for children in need of permanent families.

Lillian LansberryLillian Brooks Lansberry devoted her life to the tireless effort to place waiting children into permanent adoptive families.  Her vision of loving homes for all children stemmed from a 30-year career as a line worker, supervisor, trainer, administrator, board member, and author.  AEA was fortunate to have Lillian Brooks Lansberry as a long-time member, Board Member, and Vice President.  On December 15, 1997 Lillian died unexpectedly while conducting adoption research with a colleague in Atlanta, Georgia.

Charles Lansberry, Lillian’s husband, joined AEA in establishing this award in his wife’s memory.  The next award will be given at the AEA Conference in May at the Wyndham Orlando Resort in Orlando, FL.   AEA is currently seeking contributions that will establish in perpetuity the Lillian Brooks Lansberry Award.

Lanecia Continues to Help Others
Lanecia Radcliff , the 2011 Lillian Brooks Lansberry Award recipient from ChildNet, Inc. in Broward County, Florida was awarded a $1,000 scholarship to do something special—something that can’t be done without the award—for children in need of permanent families.

With a portion of the scholarship, Lanecia was able to pay for one of her girls in foster care to attend Girl Scout Camp.  She had been unable to attend camp last year due to funding.  Lanecia also bought her a bike because she wanted an activity that would help her with her goal of losing weight.

But that’s not all.  Lanecia not only provides dance classes for teens at a group home, she is also using some of those funds to start a program that will provide arts education to children who have been adopted and children with the goal of adoption.  This program is in partnership with another organization.

We can see why Lanecia is well known for her passion for helping children.  AEA is honored to have her as the 2011 Lillian Brooks Lansberry Award Winner.  Keep up the great work, Lanecia!
