A new report finds that youth in the foster care system are leaving before they age out. Though forty states offer some form of support for these youth, research indicates that an overwhelming number leave before they turn 18.
California Governor Jerry Brown has signed into law Senate Bill 12 for $15 million in college assistance to be offered to youth aged 16 to 26 in foster care. This program is called NextUp and its ultimate goal is to become available statewide at all college campuses.
New YorkSenate Bill 6518 would permit child welfare agencies to halt payments to adoptive parents and transfer those payments to a new guardian or adoptees older than 18 years. Coalition groups are looking to gain more support for this bill even though it is not going to end broken adoptions, instead it will address the problem of adoptive parents collecting a subsidy not rightfully theirs.
