Kansas Governor transitioning from Jeff Colyer to Laura Kelly has been marked by research dispute about welfare benefits and foster care, cancelled grants and accusations of obstruction. The interim director of the Department of Children and Families has stated since grants weren't considered by a separate entity, the evaluations were not neutral.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed a directive that removes a religious exemption for faith-based groups contracted with the government. This may lead to the contracted agencies being forced to change their policies on same-sex couples in order to continue their contracts.

National- The Department of Health and Human Services will reimburse states for legal support given to parents involved in child welfare proceedings, including expenses of advocates for the parents and children. As there are different possible approaches to ensure no conflict of interest it will be a lengthy process.
