Alaska Tribal Child Welfare Compact was signed into effect into 2017 by former Governor Bill Walker but the Alaska Federation of Natives and state tribal officials are criticizing Governor Mike Dunleavy and the state of Alaska for backing out of negotiations. The Partnership with the Office of Children's Services and loss of the Alaska Tribal Child Welfare Compact will be an enormous loss for Alaska children.

California Los Angeles district will start reporting more extensive data on foster youth concerning their school stability, academic data and social emotional indicators. The Every Student Succeeds Act requires states to report achievement data and graduation rates for students in foster care.

Minnesota's African American Family Preservation and Child Welfare Disproportionality Act filed to advance for the second year in a row in the Senate. A coalition including parents, lawmakers and social workers have banded together to find common ground to improve treatment of black children in Minnesota's children protection system after legislative efforts stalled again this session.
