Colorado nonprofit Realities for Children Boulder County awards college scholarships to former foster youth to assist them in succeeding in college. Realities for Children not only provides scholarships but also an independent-transitional living program and an emergency fund. The organization's operational costs are supported by businesses who pay an annual membership fee so that all donor dollars go towards the main services.
Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services has a new website for transition age youth in foster care. This website scheduled to be accessible to June 24 is called Kentucky RISE (Resources for Independence, Success and Empowerment). It will allow for youth to complete an online application and receiving birth certificates and link to summer employment initiatives.
Massachusetts Department of Children and Families is working to ensure that foster youth over 28 years of age will have continued medical coverage through medicaid coverage even after they age out of foster care. Currently former foster youth are required to re-enroll every year, an often overlooked process that to a transient youth who is experiencing unstable housing may cause issues when being notified. Legislation (H 124/S 35) would ensure that DCF will continue to automatically re-enroll 18 year olds into MassHealth and each after that.
