Massachusetts Cultural Council and The Department of Children and Families have launched a pilot program that uses art to make supervised meetings between children in foster care and their families more enjoyable. The program was launched in July and has been met with enthusiasm by the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art that hosts "Sibling Saturdays" where children can get together in Kidspace.
University of Texas at San Antonio is opening a new Fostering Educational Success Center to provide services for students with a history of being in the welfare system. This joint venture between the Division of the Student Success and the Department of Social Work, is to help students overcome the unique challenges they face when pursuing higher education. This center will help support the students to complete their education by helping them meet their basic needs, connecting them with helpful resources and help provide a sense of community.
The Family First Prevention Services Act took effect in Nebraska on October 1st and provides local organizations funding to provide preventative services to families before children enter into foster care. DHHS is submitting a five year prevention plan that includes evidence-based services to empower families at risk of children entering into the welfare system. These services include mental health, family therapy, and substance abuse programs.
