US - National annual foster care and adoption data are showing the number of children in foster care has decreased for the first time since 2011. This data from the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS) by the Children's Bureau at HHS' Administration for Children and Families (ACF).
Los Angeles Unified School District in California has approved a five-year, $14 million transportation plan for children in foster care. This is in compliance with the federal law, Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) that local educational and child welfare agencies must provide transportation for youth in foster care between their home and school.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed House Bills 4549 and 4550 which is meant to expand the role of children welfare staff and programs to help in case management. House Bill 4549 allows access to protected health information for review and accreditation of a child welfare program House Bill 4550 amends the Guardianship Assistance Act to allow DHHS the authority to obtain national and state fingerprint based criminal records check for current and past guardians.
