New York State lawmakers are proposing a bill to reduce caseloads for local social service workers. The new bill would cap the number of cases to 12 because caseload size is directly related to child safety outcomes. Experience suggests that caseworkers with too large of a caseload negatively impacts children by increasing their stay in the foster care system, moving around more often or being in a less safe environment with their family.

Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown is sponsoring a Senate bill to make it easier for youth aging out of foster care to obtain housing vouchers. This proposed legislation would alter the Family Unification Program to allow any public housing agency to request a voucher from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to help prevent homelessness for foster youth aging out of the system.

Tennessee nonprofit Isaiah117 House is providing houses in over ten counties to provide support to the DCS staff and the children coming into custody. Isaiah 117 provides a house for the DCS worker to take the child to where volunteers can help with the child while the worker finds a place for the child. Each house is designed for children to stay for 24 hours or less and has a red door.
