New York nonprofits should brace for possible state cuts to social services at the upcoming legislative session. Though there were some noteworthy legislative wins for the nonprofits a massive shortfall has been caused by Medicaid spending. Other major bills related to child welfare will be revisited so nonprofits are paying close attention to the governor's State of the State speech regarding his upcoming budget proposal which will outline major goals and spending priorities for 2020.

Pennsylvania's new Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney has signed two executive orders just hours after being sworn in. He has created an Office of Children and Families that encompass the Department of Human Services, which will oversee child welfare.

Foster care adoptions in the US have reached a record high according to the US Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS). Though this is good news the spike in adoptions is also considered a sign of the opioid crisis increasing. As a result fewer children are being reunited with their biological parents and primary caretakers.
