California Ambassador to Connect Our Kids, Georgette Todd, emphasizes the importance of connecting children with their extended family and relatives. Connect Our Kids allows child welfare systems and providers to quickly find potential relatives for children through their "People Search". It is a free tool for social services to use to research finding extended family and mentors for children, especially for departments that do not have the resources.
ColoradoSenate Bill 106 is looking to regulate underaged homeless in line with that of the federal government by allowing teens access to shelters without parental approval. If the underaged youth does not reconcile with family the shelter can contact a child welfare agency instead of parents if there is suspicion of neglect or abuse.
Maine imprisons nonviolent youth due to its lack of treatment options according to the "Maine Juvenile Justice System Assessment" written by the Center for Children's Law and Policy and the Center for the Study of Social Policy. The youth were detained not because they were a threat to the community but due to the authorities determining they could not go home.
