Sanctuary Palm Springs in Arizona was founded to address the needs of transition-aged LGBTQ youth in the foster care system, aimed to provide residents with assistance to become independent and self-sufficient. Community restrictions have been put in place to address the coronavirus and residents recently worked to give back to the community by winning a $10,000 grant to go towards a second facility.
South Carolina foster parents face tough decisions as school districts offer personal learning and virtual learning. Foster families received guidance from the state Department of Social Services indicating a preference for face to face instruction at school unless there are extenuating circumstances. SC DSS is handling cases on an individual basis to accommodate different scenarios and suggests families get in touch with their case managers to make back to school decisions.
US House of Representatives introduces Supporting Foster Youth and Families through the Pandemic Act to support the COVID-19 response in the child welfare system but increasing funding and flexibilities for programs targeting older foster youth, child abuse prevention, and kinship care providers. The bipartisan legislation's $400 million increase in funding for programs and increase the eligibility age to 26, allowing youth about to age out to remain in care.
